This position manages the development and distribution of all language translations of Mary Baker Eddy's published writings. The incumbent will hire, train, and nurture translation teams working collaboratively to create new translations or revise existing language translations.Responsibilities include strategizing and implementing global-focused translation projects while collaborating with several departments involved in other translation deliverables, proactively collaborating with internal colleagues and outside vendors; and metaphysically supporting the Bible and Mary Baker Eddy's writings.ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES1. Manage all aspects of translation projects for the Office of the Publisher's Agent (OPA). (90%)
    • With the Board of Directors (as Publisher) and the Publisher's Agent, prioritize languages and book titles for translation and/or revision.
    • Together with the Publisher's Agent, generate, implement, and oversee strategic short- and long-term plans for all translation activity related to Mary Baker Eddy's writings and relevant non-English Bibles; track project progress according to plan and make adjustments as necessary.
    • Prepare all translation project budgets, working closely with Publisher's Agent for approvals; track projects' progress according to budget; oversee translator payments, and manage projects in an economical fashion.
    • Represent relevant translations perspective and experience to other departments as needed.Project Management
      • Hire and manage all translators for OPA translations projects.
      • Schedule translation projects and monitor progress in order to identify issues and implement solutions; make adjustments to contractor staffing or project scheduling as situations require.
      • Contact, interview, hire, and manage short-term contractors (including but not limited to copyeditors, reviewers, and proofreaders).
      • Manage relationships and activity with Promotion & Design Services Group (P&DSG) related to the typesetting and proofreading of translations.
      • Work closely with the Print Production Manager regarding printing and distributing both new translations and reprints, as well as internal archiving and digitizing.
      • Provide oversight and strategic guidance for the non-English Bible review and selection process; facilitate strong cross-departmental involvement and communications in said process.
      • Prepare documents and files for review by the Board of Directors regarding relevant translations-related topics pertaining to international fields.
      • Manage (and train, as needed) OPA translations staff consisting of a Translations Coordinator or Administrator (and a Proofreading Coordinator as needed).
      • Manage big-picture, annual, and quarterly goals for all translations-related projects, ensuring they are in line with department and organizational goals.
      • Propose and implement internal process changes when necessary.Communication
        • Lead communications with all OPA translators, including outreach, encouragement, support, and mediation if needed; represent those translators as part of inter-departmental teams (such as the Translations Group).
        • Lead communications with Christian Science teachers and practitioners, translators, and reviewers regarding translation issues and project needs in their various fields.
        • Devise and implement methods by which to effectively gather and analyze field input to enable informed decision-making regarding translation activity and needs.
        • Together with the OPA team, and with appropriate input from translators, create and implement marketing strategy, presentations or webinars, and collateral for translated products; work with Publisher's Agent to set pricing and communicate to other departments and Reading Rooms on the release dates as well as promotional, marketing, and sales information relevant to translations.2. Participate in other translation-related activities (10%)
          • Participate in organizational policy planning by representing OPA in the cross-departmental Translations Group and in collaborative meetings coordinated by the International Service Department.
          • Respond to Board correspondence and other communications received from the field.
          • Participate in department-wide and cross-departmental strategic planning.
          • Participate in meetings with the Board of Directors on an occasional, as-needed basis.
          • Design, delegate, and support intern projects as needed.STAFF MANAGEMENT AND JOB CONTACTSReporting RelationshipsSupervision: Publisher's AgentSupervises: Translations Coordinator or Administrator, Proofreading Coordinator as neededRegular ContactsWork closely with Bible Lesson Products, International Service Department, Office of Language Services, Herald editors, and other employees at The Mother Church and The Christian Science Publishing Society as necessary. Also, work with graphic designers, production staff, customer service teams, and others to design the product, packaging, delivery method, and related marketing, customer response, and advertising materials.This position has regular contact with all internal and external departments, outside vendors, and with members of The Christian Science Board of Directors.JOB REQUIREMENTSEducation/ExperienceCollege degree in communications, business, project management, linguistics, international relations or equivalent required. A minimum 6-8 years relevant work experience is required. Incumbent must love working with languages and people of different cultures; fluency in one or more languages other than English is preferred. Willingness to learn extra technical skills as needed is required. Marketing, advertising experience, basic book design, and/or a knowledge of graphic design are a plus.Knowledge/SkillsSpiritual discernment, humility, professionalism. Incumbent should have strong interpersonal skills, business acumen, and the ability to effectively manage a diverse workload. Proven written and oral communication skills and good presentation skills required. Demonstrated competence managing multiple projects in a first-rate fashion; must be good at setting priorities and initiating and fostering strong working relationships. Ability to maintain confidences.Demonstrated problem-solver who takes initiative and has superb follow-through, information-gathering, organizational, and project management skills; intelligent, conscientious, and hardworking self-starter. Confident team player who also works well independently; expected to maintain a poised demeanor even in pressured or ambiguous situations. Must be delighted at the opportunity to deeply study Mary Baker Eddy's writings in conjunction with this work, as well as research the history of their publication and their relationship to the church organization. Publishing knowledge preferred; understanding of basic book design a plus.This position should be energetic, upbeat, thoughtful, creative, willing, gracious, discerning, kind, receptive, and solution-oriented.Individual must have strong word-processing skills (such as Google Suite). Must be extremely comfortable with learning new technologies. Agile (such as Scrum) and Trello experience preferred. Familiarity with Adobe Acrobat & InDesign, MemoQ and TEI a plus.An individual in this position should be comfortable in a highly prayerful, fast-paced, and flexible atmosphere. This position will work in the Publishing House in Boston, MA; domestic and international travel is required.Engagement with Christian ScienceMembership in The Mother Church and Primary Class instruction required.In compliance with federal law, all persons hired will be required to verify identity and eligibility to work in the United States and to complete the required employment eligibility verification document form upon hire.
