Job Description - Director of Development, Major Gifts
(3302723)The Director of Development plays an integral role in
strengthening the philanthropic program for the Mass General for
Children (MGfC), an area with a number of cutting-edge clinical and
research programs that depend on philanthropic support. The
Director oversees multiple pediatric department fundraising efforts
for MGfC and is responsible for achieving fundraising goals. The
Director is responsible for raising between $3M-$4M annually and
manages one (possibly two) gift officers.Working closely with MGfC
leadership, Development colleagues, hospital physicians and nurses,
the Director will manage a portfolio of donors and will be
responsible for the strategic identification, cultivation,
solicitation and stewardship of major gifts prospects and donors
who are at various stages in their relationship with the
hospital.The ideal candidate will be highly professional and able
to adapt flexibly to emerging opportunities within a fast-paced
environment. They will be a collegial and entrepreneurial team
player with a proven ability to motivate, engage, and work

and accomplishments.Principal Duties and Responsibilities
- Actively manage a portfolio of prospects and donors at the
$250K or higher level.
- Formulate, document and execute prospect and donor moves
management strategies with a high level of independence.
- Meet targets for prospect activity and fundraising outcomes
through both proactive and reactive donor identification and
engagement.
- Successfully solicit and close gifts (outright, life income,
bequests, and gifts of assets), working with hospital leadership
and senior staff as appropriate to develop and produce compelling
donor proposals.
- Collaborate with colleagues across fundraising teams to achieve
team and overall Development Office fundraising goals.
- Fully document work in a donor database.
- Work with prospects to develop and enhance the relationship to
and connection with the hospital, ultimately leveraging that
relationship to maximize philanthropic giving.
- Provide active management, mentorship and leadership to direct
reports.
- Conduct all appropriate evaluations, provide regular
performance feedback, coaching and mentoring.
- Provide guidance in goal setting and in developing annual
operating plans.
- Serve as an advocate and mentor and encourage their
professional development.
- Maintain updated job descriptions.
- Lead the recruitment process partnering with Talent Management
and HR.
- Attend department-wide Manager meetings, as needed.
- Develop a thorough understanding of the research, clinical,
teaching and community missions at Mass General and Mass General
for Children.
- Create, maintain and strengthen collaborative relationships
with physicians, researchers and administrative directors.
- Create and maintain a menu of giving opportunities for assigned
areas; write case statements and proposals as needed.
- Prepare and regularly update progress reports.
- Contribute to maintaining positive office morale, even in the
face of high work volume and challenging periods.
- Assist with recruitment activities as needed.
- Take on other office-wide duties at the request of Development
leadership.
- Adhere to the mission, credo, and standards of behavior of Mass
General.This position requires 7-10 years of experience and a
bachelor's degree. We are looking for someone who has a
comprehensive understanding of major gifts fundraising principles
and practices; knowledge of health care, demonstrated ability to
build relationships both internally and with prospects and donors
and solicit prospects or donors for philanthropic support.The ideal
candidate will possess the following skills, abilities and
competencies:
- Experience devising and implementing cultivation and
solicitation strategies for donors at all stages of engagement,
from newly identified prospects to loyal donors.
- Excellent communication and writing skills.
- Active listening skills and the ability to influence
others.
- Experience managing and engaging with leadership
volunteers.
- Proven ability to motivate, engage and work collaboratively
with diverse audiences in a variety of situations.
- Ability to think strategically and manage multiple individual
and team projects effectively.

- A strong work ethic.
- Professionalism, resourcefulness, flexibility, a learning

- Proficiency in data entry, data management and reporting
(Blackbaud CRM or Raiser's Edge preferred).Massachusetts General
