DescriptionVertex has established a new research site in Boston
Seaport where research, development, and clinical manufacturing for
cell and genetic therapies will be primarily based. Cell and
genetic therapies represent two rapidly emerging therapeutic
modalities with the potential to treat-and even cure-several of the
diseases Vertex is focused on, including sickle cell disease,
Duchenne muscular dystrophy and type 1 diabetes. Further investment
in a research site specifically designed to advance these programs
will be key to Vertex's continued and sustained leadership in these
exciting approaches. At Vertex Cell and Genetic Therapies (VCGT),

enhanced manufacturing capabilities to ensure we bring these
cutting-edge transformative therapies to patients as quickly as
possible.Vertex is seeking a talented Process Development
Engineering Senior Scientific Associate to join our Process
Development team. This individual will support the media
development projects in cell and gene therapy applications, through
a combined approach of fundamental hypotheses and high throughput
screening and optimization.Key Duties and Responsibilities:
- Design and perform experiments and data analysis on media
development and optimization.
- Coordinate studies and new assays needed with analytical
development.
- Collaborate with cross-functional stakeholders including
Research and Manufacturing Science teams, to support the
implementation of innovations in cell culture media to the
commercial scale manufacturing.
- Utilizes fundamental understanding of molecular and cell
biology to guide the experimental design and focuses on media
development.
- Applies statistical principles and DoE approaches to guide
process optimization.
- Collaborates with team members, align on project goals and
priorities, sharing results and participate in team
discussions.
- Contribute to fostering a collaborative working environment and
positive team culture.
- Ensure data integrity by timely completion of phase-appropriate
documentation, including experiment recording in electronic
notebook system, develop protocols, and author reports to support
future technology transfer and regulatory filings.
- Ensure compliance on lab safety procedures.
- Periodic weekend work required.Required Qualifications:
- A Master's degree in Biochemistry, Engineering, Biology or
related discipline and 0-2 years of experience or BS degree and 4+
years of experience, or the equivalent combination of education and
experience.
- Process development experience in a bio-pharmaceutical setting
working with interdisciplinary and cross-cultural teams.
- Experience in aseptic processing and cell culture.
- Ability to effectively communicate findings, progress, and
problems.
- Ability to collaborate and work effectively in a
multidisciplinary team.
- Strong organizational skills and high attention to
details.
- Experience in cell therapy.
- Experience in media development and optimization.
- Pluripotent stem cell culture experience in 2D and/or 3D.
- Experience performing stem cell differentiation.
- Experience working with bioreactors and high throughput cell
